Senior Thesis: The Age of Viking

The two books are separated by physical and spiritual attributes of the Norsemen. The first, Forn Siðr (meaning "old custom"), covers storytelling, myths, and sagas in the Norse religion with excerpts from the Prose Edda. It concludes detailing the Norsemen's conversion to Christianity.
BOOK I: FORN SIÐR
The cover depicts the Norse Cosmos made up of nine worlds that hang in the ash tree Yggdrasill. Here the worlds are organized to resemble the rune, Algiz, (shown on the back cover) which represents a connection to the divine and otherworldly things.
Odin sends his two ravens, Huginn and Muninn, into the world to seek knowledge and to watch. They report to him all they have seen at the end of every day.
Along the bottom of these pages is a timeline of events in Norse mythology from the creation of the universe to the end of the world and its eventual rebirth.
BOOK II: The Men of Miðgarðr
The second book covers the physical lives of the Vikings such as economy, warfare, and language. Miðgarðr translates to "Middle Earth" and was the name for the realm where humans lived in Norse mythology.
The cover focuses on Miðgarðr, the tree Yggdrasill still in the background. Surrounding Miðgarðr is the giant serpent called Jörmungandr.
On the back cover the mannaz rune is featured which represents humankind.
In addition to his ravens, Odin kept two wolves (Geri and Freki) as companions.
The page structure of Book II is meant to be reminiscent of medieval manuscripts with wide margins on the sides and bottom of the page for captions and notation. It also has four columns per spread and is more symmetrical as opposed to Book I which had six columns and more poetic based typography.
At the back of Book II is a hand-drawn map depicting the origins and expansion of Viking exploration.
The map folds out beyond the rest of the book so that you may continue to read with reference to the places being
discussed in the text without having to flip back and forth constantly.
Collection of all of the hand-drawn illustration used in the books. Most were creating using a stippling technique.
